The Risk of Not Taking Action

fine-line

When it comes to improving driver safety, some fleets put off implementing telematics because they are concerned about becoming aware of something that until now they have not had to develop a policy for and subsequently manage. Ask yourself, what is riskier… not knowing if a fleet has drivers who could use driver safety training, or knowing that there are drivers who require training, and focusing attention on developing policy and procedures on how to help them?

Simply put, the cost of not knowing far outweighs the cost of measuring and managing safety using affordable telematics technology. One Geotab client bought telematics technology specifically for the purpose of reducing self-insured vehicle damage, and their personal injury claims resulted in 7x payback each and every year since deploying. If that’s not incentive enough, the courts are awarding increasingly large punitive settlements against companies that do not apply what is deemed to be generally available and accessible technology.

In 2012, in a negligent compliance case, the court awarded $22 million to a plaintiff where the fleet failed to reinforce its non-use of cell phone policy. The court found the fleet at fault for not enforcing a practical and common cell phone policy for improving driver safety. In New York State, the use of backup cameras by trucks was mandated after a fatality, in addition to the use of external alarms of reversing trucks in Illinois. Not having this equipment installed costs companies far more than the cost of the technology. The same case can be made for not applying practical and common tools to monitor and enforce safe driving. It is better to measure – in order to understand, develop policy, and reinforce policy than it is to not acknowledge the risk in the first place.

With a massive payback by managing safety, it is surprising that not every fleet is already fully engaged. So the question becomes … will a court find that telematics technology is ubiquitous enough with 40% of fleets installed in North America, to find a fleet negligent if it is not measuring and ultimately managing safe driving?

At Geotab, we're helping fleets everywhere improve and optimize their operations by identifying under used and spare equipment, predicting battery health, reducing vehicle wear due to aggressive driving with our easy to use, cellular connected telematics solutions and in cab mobile connected device software.

With this technology, fleet managers are enabled to improve fuel consumption, significantly reducing fuel costs by proactively tracking - and with programmable in cab alerts, correcting the undesirable driver habits that result in wasted fuel including high RPM acceleration, unnecessary idling, and driving with the check engine light on.

And with check engine light monitoring, Geotab makes it easy to centralize the engine fault codes on our web based software application to allow maintenance scheduling based on diagnostic code priority, revealing the true health of your fleet, so you can easily and proactively schedule required maintenance, and stay ahead of potential issues before they turn into major costly repairs.

Geotab Telematics Pillar: Driver Safety

For fleets staying safe means more than reducing personal injury and vehicle damage. It's essential to choose a partner who understands that safety behind the wheel means an improvement in fuel economy, company reputation and clean motor vehicle licenses for your drivers.

At Geotab, we're transforming the way companies approach fleet safety with easy to use, next generation telematics solutions. Geotab pioneered driver specific habit monitoring over ten years ago and stays ahead of the curve with the introduction of our new NFC driver ID technology for multi driver fleets.

We've improved event recording by developing a menu based selection of industry rules, plus the ability to turn on audible alerts in the vehicle to help drivers become more aware of safe driving thresholds.

Our simple plug and play technology goes deeper than just engine diagnostics to include seatbelt usage, passenger occupancy, harsh braking, over revving RPMs, vehicles in reverse, road speed and more.

Plus, customizable safety trending reports that let you know how your fleet is performing over time and instant accident notifications via email or text.

Through direct driver awareness and event summary reports for supervisors, you'll see your fuel costs improve and your claims costs go down.

Accidents Happen

In the United States, 317,000 large trucks were involved in traffic crashes during 2012, this according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Amongst these:

  • 65% of accidents involving two vehicles were front impact collisions
  • 17% left side
  • 12% right side
  • Only 6% rear impacts
  • & 46% of these crashes involve both vehicles proceeding straight

These numbers suggest that the crashes have cost these organizations large sums of money – both in vehicle damage and personal injury. However, the vehicle or truck driver may not be at fault, and opportunity to avoid costly repair and insurance fees may exist. One of the best ways to re-create a trip and accurately uncover what occurred, second-by-second is to leverage telematics technology.

While the aim of using telematics is to avoid accidents from occurring by being proactive in the first place, such as by improving driver behavior – the bottom line is that accidents can still happen. Even the most careful and best drivers can find themselves in an unexpected on-road predicament. But the key thing to note is that an accident doesn’t always have to impact your bottom line. With the use of MyGeotab, a world leading fleet management software used by businesses of all sizes, business owners and fleet managers can use the tools available to instantly analyze accidents.

Reports and Data
Looking at the map and trips history report has typically been a traditional form of looking at an event. However, there are more tools that provide insight for various occurrences…from point of impact to acceleration graph.

Point of Impact Chart: This is a speed profile chart that shows the speed of the vehicle during the time of the accident. In this case, the yellow section indicates the vehicle was stopped before the point of impact.

Acceleration Graph: This is a side-to-side acceleration graph. In this case, negative represents right. The graph shows the vehicle accelerated to the right at the point of impact, thus it was hit from the left side.

Engine Data
The data from the device after the accident can also be used to assess the damage of the internal system. The key here is to look for Engine Fault Codes. These codes will refer to issues in the vehicle reported by the engine computer. Anything from transmission issues to ABS (Automatic Braking System). Furthermore, engine status data can also be used to determine issues with the vehicle. For example an increase in coolant temperature can indicate possible coolant fluid leaks or damage to the engine. Engine status data is displayed under Engine & Maintenance within MyGeotab.

Winter Driving Hazards

With the busy holiday season upon us, we all need to become mindful of the elevated risks of winter driving.  The holidays are when roadway risks are at their highest, and attentiveness to driving can be compromised. Factors such as nightfall occurring earlier, people driving under the influence and a growing number of distractions from the holiday bustle can all impact how much attention we put on our driving habits.

Interesting statistics from a 20-year analysis done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that the winter months are statistically the most dangerous for motor vehicle accidents:

  • Mile for mile driven, there are 18% more accidents in the winter than the summer
  • The rate of fatal accidents actually declines in the winter by 8% from its peak in summer due to speeds being lower due to road conditions
  • The frequency of property-damage only accidents is 22% higher in winter than summer

Even though most people drive slower during the winter months due to ice, the slippery surfaces tend to test our ability to follow vehicles at appropriate distances and to stop and turn more cautiously.  The numbers prove that many drivers fail those tests.

Fleet managers must remain keenly aware of these elevated risk factors:  a blend of dark streets, icy roads, distracted driving from phone calls and other on-road events. Now is the time to remind drivers that each of them is, in effect, a fleet risk manager and each driver must adjust their driving behavior in light of the season’s hazards.

Geotab’s state-of-the-art GO device is able to help drivers be more cognizant when it comes to their driving habits by providing in-vehicle audible alerts when their driving becomes risky. For instance, if the brake is hit too hard or if the driver accelerates too fast, the driver will hear beeping that alerts them of their risky driving behavior and they can self-correct.  With the customizable rules within the software, a company can align their safety policies with the system to ensure the fleet vehicles are driven appropriately.
